Grant Information

We are pleased to announce grant support from the Wheeler Center for the Neurobiology of Addiction. These grants have been made possible by a gift from the Park Water Company, owned and operated by Mr. Henry H. Wheeler Jr. and family.

The Wheeler Center for the Neurobiology of Addiction provides support for research projects that contribute significantly to our understanding of the biological basis of addiction. Research grants should be in one of three major research areas: the molecular targets of addicting drugs, the cellular and molecular basis of their action, and the neural circuits involved in addictive behaviors.

Four types of grants are currently offered:

  • Research grants. Up to $50,000 (direct) per grant. The Wheeler Center will consider innovative and collaborative proposals from established investigators whose primary research interest is outside of addiction-related research. Proposals are also encouraged from investigators with experience in addiction research if their application represents a new departure from their current research activities. Priority will be given to junior faculty and to proposals that can reasonably be expected to impact our understanding of the basic neural mechanisms of addiction.
  • Postdoctoral research fellowships. Support up to a maximum of $45,000 will be available for stipends and for research support. Stipend levels will be identical to those set by NIH. In addition, up to $10,000 will be awarded to support the research project. Priority will be given to fellows who are have less than four years experience following receipt of their doctorate and to those who are not eligible for NIH fellowship support. Applications should be submitted by email to Howard Fields. Use the standard NIH individual postdoctoral research fellowship format (phs 416-1), download it from the NIH site, or obtain it from the UCSF Office of Research Affairs (415)-476-2977. At least two letters of recommendation are also required.
  • Predoctoral research fellowships and travel awards. Support ranging from $1500 for courses and meetings to $22,000 for student stipends will be available to support graduate student stipends, meetings and short courses. Stipend levels will be awarded based on the guidelines of the graduate program in which the student is enrolled.

For stipend support, please use the standard NIH individual predoctoral fellowship award forms.

For meeting and travel grants, please describe the meeting, your reason for wanting to attend, and the relevance of the course to neurobiology addiction. Also include a letter of support from your thesis supervisor.
General Rules:
  • We discourage the use of grant funds to support PI salary.
  • One application per PI, however, a fellow and/or a graduate student can be supported in the laboratory of a PI who has also been awarded a research grant.
  • The text of a proposal should be no longer than 2000 words excluding references - longer proposals will not be accepted.

Funding is available to all full-time academic senate faculty members at UCSF. Up to 5 grants will be awarded per year. The decision of the review committee will be final.
